Weekend + Monday Motivation

Happy Monday!!!  I hope everyone out there had an excellent weekend!

Ours was pretty good around here.  Friday night was pretty low key.  We made a frozen pizza and watched Southpaw (and admittedly I fell asleep before the end).  Sorry Jake Gyllenhaal.

Saturday was an exciting day!  We picked out our appliances and checked out the house like adults! It’s really starting to come together and we are super excited to hopefully be moving in soon!

Saturday afternoon Kris’ friend came to visit so me and the B dog snuggled up on the couch to watch a chick flick.  I Red Boxed The Age of Adeline, and I thought it was pretty good.  Definitely predictable, but I like feel good movies and Blake Lively so I thought it was a winner.

On Sunday we got our tailgate on with some delicious meatball sandwiches and the Bills even brought home a win.

Now for some Monday motivation, since I didn’t do so well last week with the Pile on the Miles challenge that I said I was going to do for my November Goals.  I only logged another 6 miles this week.  So that leaves me with 70 miles to go for November.  I better get my butt moving.  Here’s the plan for the week:

Monday – 5 miles

Tuesday – yoga

Wednesday – 5 miles

Thursday – circuit workout

Friday – rest

Saturday – 5 miles

Sunday – 3 miles

just do it even if you suck at it

Balance

Good morning, and happy hump day!  Does anyone else find themselves increasingly happy as the week goes on?

the first 5 days of the week

This week I am really struggling with balance.  It’s a vicious cycle for me. I will go, go, go one week only to hit the wall the next.

smigel dishes

These are the weeks that I struggle with small tasks like washing my face before bed and doing the dishes, as well as the bigger tasks like blogging, making dinner, working out.  And instead of just doing what I can, I want to shut it down all together and lay on the couch everyday after work.  It’s weeks like these that make me wonder whether 1. I just have weeks that I feel beat down for chemical reasons beyond my control, or 2. I need to re-evaluate the art of balance in my life.

Now, in my defense we have been super busy the past few weeks… But then I realize that life is busy (and then I think about people who have children and wonder how the heck they do it… but that’s a worry for another time).  So I’m dedicating today to trying to keep the balance.

Ok, maybe that’s little extreme.  Unfortunately, work requires that I at least put on pants today.  But you get the idea.

How do you keep a healthy balance?

Do you have weeks/days that you struggle to stay motivated?

Halloween Weekend + November Goals

Good morning!  Here we are at the start of another week and we are officially kicking off November.  I can’t believe how fast time is flying!

But first, this weekend was a really great one.  It was one of those rare and special times where everything just seems to come together and everyone in the family is miraculously available.

I loaded up the B dog for a road trip and headed down to my parents on Saturday.

I love spending Halloween with my parents, sitting on the porch with the pups and handing out candy.  I have spent many-a Halloweens at my parents house, and even my sister was able to join this year.

The pups were all decked out in their Halloween best:

Although, we didn’t get to attend any Halloween parties this year, here is a flashback from last year’s Anchorman outfits:

On Sunday we were able to round up my brother and we all went to brunch at Bravo.  I didn’t even know they had brunch there, but I got the veggie omelet and it was dee-lish!

After brunch we headed over to the shooting range for some quality family bonding time.

Now onto November!  I needed some motivation to keep running outside now that the weather is getting cold.  Kris and I signed up to run the Turkey Trot this year, but that won’t be enough to keep me motivated.  That’s when I found Monica’s Pile on the Miles Challenge 2015.  So I jumped at the chance to have a little motivation in my run game.  I set my goal for the month at 81 miles.  Sounds kind of ridiculous doesn’t it?  It certainly won’t be easy, but I’m going to give it my best shot!

Yesterday I kicked off the month with a 5 mile run:

5 miles down, 76 to go.

Weekend & Workouts

Good morning!  I can’t believe we’re about to have another Monday in the books. But before we get started, I could use a little motivation for the week considering I ate apple pie for most of my meals this weekend.

I’m still working on my picture abilities, but I promise it tasted better than it looks.  Just incase you were curious, I used this recipe for the apple filling and this recipe for the double pie crust.

Friday night we had some visitors staying with us and we layed low.  Saturday we drove to Pittsburgh for a baby shower.  We could tell by the sky when we were leaving that it was going to be an interesting drive.

Despite the snow and rain we encountered, the leaves were so beautiful!

On Sunday, we prepped ourselves for a cold tailgate!  Doesn’t mother nature know it’s still only October??

Workouts for the week looked a little something like this:

Sunday – 3 mile run

Monday  – 4 mile run

Tuesday – hot yoga

Wednesday – 6 mile run

Thursday – hot yoga

Friday – rest

Saturday – rest

I was pretty happy with my exercise until I ate all the apple pie on my rest days.

This week is actually a short week for us because we are leaving for London on Wednesday!!  We still have so much to do in over the next 2 days.

How do you keep your motivation over the weekends?

Week 1

Hello there! Long time no talk.  The past month has been crazy busy at work, but this week I made a commitment to myself that I would get back on track… so here we go.  Week 1 (and some random ramblings about the happenings of late).

  1. I signed up to run the Pittsburgh Half Marathon again in May as a charity runner for the Animal Rescue League.  Last year was the first year I signed up as a charity runner and I wasn’t really sure what to expect.  It will be a bit more difficult for me this year because living 3 hours away will make it tough to participate in most of the charity events, but the show must go on!  If you would like to donate to the cause or become a charity runner yourself, you can find my page here:

2. I have been trying to take advantage of this beautiful fall weather to get some runs in.  I recently got a Fitbit Charge HR and I am in LOVE.  It is such a motivator for me to get moving when I have to try to meet my 10,000 steps and to get to bed when I want to meet my 8 hour sleep goals.

Fitbit Charge HR

I also really enjoyed Laurel’s FitBit challenge this week.  I actually walked laps around our apartment to meet my goal last night… but hey, a step’s a step.

I don’t think I’m the only one enjoying all these extra steps…

when you can't even

3. On Tuesday evening I even made it back to the yoga studio for a hot happy hour.  I love yoga.  It is such a great workout physically and mentally.  And who doesn’t feel accomplished after a good sweat at a heated class??  I realized the other day that I haven’t been to a class since the beginning of the summer.  I should probably also mention that it feels painful to be back.  Holy crap, I was sore the past 2 days.  (But I secretly love it.)

4. Now the challenge will be to stick with it! Consistency is my arch nemesis (incase you haven’t noticed).  I know this is probably not my last ‘Week 1’ ever, but hopefully it is the last one for a while. 🙂

Now to keep the momentum going over the weekend!  Happy Friday, all!

You Know you Need A Motivation Monday When…

Yesterday morning as I was sitting at my desk, sulking in my Monday blues, I decided it was a good time to do some organizing which happened to include a very large stack of papers that needed stapled back together and filed.

In the midst of my stapling frenzy, I realized that my shoulder was getting tired… From picking up a stapler and putting it back on my desk over and over. While I was feeling a little embarrassed for myself, I realized that it was a clear sign that I needed some motivation. And also that I need to re-evaluate my summer routine.

In an effort to save some money and embrace the summer weather, I quit my gym membership and came up with a handful of circuit workouts that I was going to combine with running. Well let me just be the first to admit that I have officially fallen off the wagon.

out of shape meme

Here are some other signs that you might also need a good, old fashioned, Motivation Monday:

1. Your arms are aching while blow drying your hair (check)

2. You are embarrassingly out of breath at the top of the stairs (yep)

3. Doing one push-up feels like the equivalent of running a marathon (ugh)

4. You post a Motivation Monday post on a Tuesday (whoops)…

On the plus side, I spent all last night grocery shopping and meal planning so at least I have a plan!  Here’s what’s on the agenda today:

Breakfast: English muffin with peanut butter

Snack: Fruit!

fruit bowl

Lunch: One of these awesome salads with baby spinach, arugula, sprouts, cucumber, tomato, bell peppers, edamame, and cottage cheese.

lunch salad

Snack: yogurt and green tea

Dinner: Some sort of eggplant/zucchini parmesan

How do you know when it’s time to re-evaluate your workout regimen?

How to Break Out of a Workout Rut

This week I was in a total workout rut and I had zero remorse (kind of).  It’s perfectly acceptable to take a day or two off to rest, but I was taking it to the next level.  I had 5 days of inactivity until finally one of my friends asked me to hit the morning PiYo class today.  So I had a brain storm, what do I normally do when I hit a workout rut?  You know, that time when you’re killing it at the gym or on your runs, about to break new personal records, and then all of the sudden – you just decide that you’ve done enough here and call it quits for a few days?  I’m sure there are some deep-seeded psychological reasons that I do this to myself, but that’s a discussion for another time never.

5 Ways to Break Out of a Workout Rut

1. Have a workout buddy to keep you accountable

I don’t always work out with a friend, I would say 90% of my workouts are solo.  I enjoy the alone time, and I find it difficult to deal with the mental challenges of having a running buddy.  However, I do have a friend or two that I will do other workouts with, and just getting back to it one time can completely turn things around.  That’s where said friend comes into play to ask you to go to a class, or meet for a quick workout, and just like that you’re back on track!

2. Don’t wait until Monday

Don’t wait for anything, for that matter.  It’s so easy to get into the mindset that if you miss Monday the whole week is shot, but we all know deep down that it’s just an excuse.  I almost used it myself this week when it was closing in on Thursday and I hadn’t worked out one day.  I thought about just writing the entire week off.  Don’t punish yourself or beat yourself up, just get back out there!

3. Schedule a workout like it’s a meeting

I have a weekly planner that I sit down and map out my daily tasks for the week every Monday.  As long as I think of a workout like a meeting, I hold myself accountable and don’t accept excuses to skip.  Make sure you schedule other activities around the workout, don’t let it be the first thing to go when things get crazy.

4. Read healthy living blogs, articles, Pinterest boards

Sometimes when I am dragging and it’s hard to visualize my goals, I hit the internet.  Get on the Pinterest app and look at healthy living boards in your spare time.  Even looking at pictures of others in workout clothes gets me feeling a little more motivated (especially when I want to look like them).

5. Just do it.

The most simple yet difficult thing to do is just to suck it up and do it.  Don’t overthink it, just get out there and make it happen.  You will never regret it.

Motivation Monday + Weekly Workout Recap

Happy Monday!

I hope you’re ready to start another week back to the grind.  This morning I woke up and went to an EFX class at FASTER.  I can definitely tell that these classes are helping me maintain if not improve my running endurance.  When we went for our outdoor run on Saturday I felt really great, which is pretty amazing considering I haven’t maintained a running regimen since the 10 miler in November.

When I got back I had some snow shoveling to do!

It’s my favorite kind too!  The beautiful kind of snow that lays on the tree branches (and weighs a billion pounds and takes down power lines).

Then I had my warm lemon water while I prepped some food for the day.  Breakfast is a grapefruit and a whole grain English muffin with almond butter+chia seed and raspberry jam.

For lunch I packed a chicken salad with kale, mushroom, grilled chicken, tomato, roasted baby redskins, buffalo sauce & balsamic vinegar:

On Friday I decided to eat candy instead of my afternoon snack, so today – take 2 Chobani with steel cut oats:

Now for the weekly workout recap from last week:

Sunday – rest

Monday – rest

Tuesday – 3.5 mile run

Wednesday – EFX class

Thursday – PiYo

Friday – EFX class

Saturday – 3ish mile run

Gotta run, but I will leave you with 2 of my favorite quotes just incase you’re looking for some motivation to get you going this week!

Motivation Monday

Happy Monday!

And it’s a short work week, yay!  But with the short week and all of the fun holiday plans it’s hard to stay motivated, so I needed a little motivation myself.  I usually try to plan my weekly workouts and a few dinner meals on Monday morning (a little late today, but better late than never).

This is what my week is shaping up to look like:

Monday – circuit workout (Body Works Plus Abs class at LA Fitness)

Tuesday – 45 minute AM spinning class

Wednesday – circuit workout (Pinterest is a great source to find workouts to take to the gym with you)

Thursday – hot yoga class

Friday – turkey trot

Saturday – run 5 miles

Sunday – rest

You may be wondering why the turkey trot falls on black Friday… My family is celebrating Thanksgiving on Friday this year to accommodate everyone’s busy schedules, so I have created my own turkey trot (and I may also be the only one running in it) 🙂

I usually try to plan my running days around the weather and alternate cardio and strength days.

Now to stick to the plan…

I hope your week is off to a good start!
